I recommands you to read '武内修@筑波大' Blog. In case you can not read Japanese. Here is my notes:

First, install Vivado 2018.1

Then install petalinux.

One issue petalinux install may saw is defalut install option does not help. normally you will bumping into root previlledge issues.

ERROR: The extensible sdk cannot be installed as root.
ERROR: Failed to install Yocto SDK for zynqMP.

Well default install directory may require root, but PetaLinux CAN NOT install from root......

Below is my step:

1) Install decencies:

$ sudo apt-get install build-essential binutils ncurses-dev u-boot-tools file
$ sudo apt-get install tofrodos iproute2 gawk net-tools libncurses5-dev tftp tftpd-hpa zlib1g-dev libssl-dev flex bison libselinux1
$ sudo apt-get install diffstat xvfb chrpath xterm libtool socat autoconf unzip texinfo gcc-multilib libsdl1.2-dev libglib2.0-dev zlib1g:i386

2) Prepare destination DIR (50G+ disk space recommended), A root fs with GUI may consume you 200G disk space:

$ mkdir ~/project/petalinux                # DO require a folder without ROOT 

3) For those use zsh , it is better to run:

$ bash ~/Downloads/petalinux-v2018.1-final-installer.run ~/project/petalinux

SDK has been successfully set up and is ready to be used.
Each time you wish to use the SDK in a new shell session, you need to source the environment setup script e.g.
 $ . /home/ray/project/petalinux/components/yocto/source/environment-setup-cortexa9hf-neon-xilinx-linux-gnueabi
 $ . /home/ray/project/petalinux/components/yocto/source/environment-setup-microblazeel-v10.0-bs-cmp-re-mh-div-xilinx-linux
 $ . /home/ray/project/petalinux/components/yocto/source/environment-setup-microblazeel-v10.0-bs-cmp-re-ml-xilinx-linux

Envirement setup:

Change to bash and run

ray@Linux:~/project/petalinux$ source settings.sh
echo $PETALINUX

If you saw PETALINUX was correctly setup, that means installation is ok.

You can play with the projects with pre-installed linux.
